Picture books can be a great tool to enable conversations with children about experiencing grief and loss. Whether it is the loss of a family member, friend, someone within their community, or even a beloved pet, picture books help children to explore the emotions and feelings that can accompany bereavement.
We have created this list for parents and carers, as well as educators and other professionals working with children, to support children processing death or loss. The 7 picture books selected explore loss, sadness and grief with a focus on wellbeing and dealing with these very difficult situations in a positive way.
This selection of books can be used with children as young as 2-3 years-olds and up to 7-8 years old and is particularly suitable for children in EYFS & KS1.
